Mission Guatemala Meals Arrive

Unloading Kids Against Hunger MealsWhat comes in 660 cartons and weighs over ten tons? 142,560 meals of highly nutritional Kids Against Hunger food, that’s what! And this week, thanks to the generosity of several Indiana churches, that quantity of food was exactly what Mission Guatemala received. Specifically, special thanks go to Fairview Missionary Church in Angola, Indiana for providing 330 of the cartons, Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, Indiana for providing 132 cartons and Christ United Methodist Church and Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Lafayette, Indiana for providing 198 cartons.

Kids Against Hunger  is a U.S. based organization that works with churches, schools, and other community-based organizations to package a specially formulated food mixture designed to help fight hunger and malnutrition around the world. The meals specifically provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins that are especially needed by a developing child’s body and mind. Mission Guatemala has developed a close relationship with the Kids Against Hunger satellite office in Greenwood, Indiana, who helped coordinate the packing and shipping of the food.

Mission Guatemala will use this food for its current feeding centers located in the communities of Nueva Esperanza and Pacaman. The food will also be used to help with emergency food relief and other hunger needs in the areas where Mission Guatemala works.

The United Nations World Food Progamme has stated that, “In Guatemala, the face of poverty and hunger is young, indigenous and rural. Guatemala, with the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean, faces a serious challenge to reduce chronic undernutrition, currently at 49.8% among children under 5.”

At Mission Guatemala, we are committed to doing whatever we can to help meet this challenge, and are overwhelmingly grateful to Kids Against Hunger and these Indiana churches for joining us in this fight.
