Mil Milagros Communications Volunteer
Start Date: ​July 18, 2016
Mil Milagros is a nonprofit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts and Panajachel,
Guatemala that works in the Highlands of Sololá, Guatemala to improve children’s health and
Today, 50% of children in Guatemala are malnourished, with rates exceeding 70% in some
communities and only 40% to 66% of children graduate from sixth grade. Mil Milagros is
fundamentally changing these odds by engaging and partnering with mother and grandmother
volunteers, and teachers, in a unique nutrition, hygiene and health care program for their children
and families. Graduation rates are up to 96% in our partner schools and measures of chronic
malnutrition are down 50% in our partner communities.
Mil Milagros has a strong team of committed staff, volunteers, and partners working to achieve
the organization’s mission to ensure that children graduate from sixth grade healthy, literate, and
prepared to continue their education. Mil Milagros seeks an (unpaid) Communications
Volunteer ​to harness external communications channels to increase awareness of Mil Milagros’
work as well as to work with the Executive Director and In­Country Director to support
fundraising efforts, including funding reports and targeted communications.
The ideal candidate​would make a minimum six­month commitment, be passionate about the
organization’s mission, and have the experience and drive necessary to successfully partner with
the In­Country Director and Executive Director to support the communications and development
efforts. This is an exciting opportunity for a creative, mission­driven individual who wants to be
a part of a small, dynamic highly impactful team. Responsibilities include:
● Update and ensure implementation of communications plan
● Improve social media engagement through the management of Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram accounts
● Update and maintain website
● Take photos and videos at partner schools
● Conduct short interviews with program beneficiaries for communications purposes
● Create promotional materials
Skills, Qualities and Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree
● Experience in the areas of social media and communications
● Excellent writing, editing, verbal and presentation skills
● Experience taking photos and video
● Proficient in Spanish
● Positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and creative
● Ability to work independently as well as a member of small close­knit team
● Team­player, adept at juggling priorities and balancing competing needs
● A passion for the organization’s mission, with ability to effectively communicate impact
● Ideal candidate will have experience with HTML and Wordpress to update web content
● Ideal candidate will have experience living and working in Guatemala
Mil Milagros will provide resources to support the volunteer to be successful, including:
­ Office space in Panajachel
­ Camera
­ Computer for website and social media updates
­ Other supplies as needed
­ iPhone for social media purposes
In­-country Director and Program Director will be available for consultation and support
