Job Description:

Position: Grants and Publications Officer – Guatemala
Location: Fundación Familias de Esperanza/Antigua
Department: Strategic Planning
Reports to: Director of Strategic Planning
Responds to: In Guatemala: Site Directors, Director of Strategic Planning
In US: Grants and Communications Coordinator, Development Director
Conditions: Full-time, volunteer, with stipend
Start date: July 2011

General Requirements:
•Commitment to the mission, vision, values, principles, and goals of Common Hope and its sites in Guatemala
•Demonstrated attitude of service and commitment to work in a service environment and learn about Guatemalan culture
•Willingness to work on site and in the villages
•Willingness to share work experiences with donors, Sponsors, Vision Teams, and others to raise consciousness and fund-raise
•Ability to work effectively in both Spanish and English, with strong oral and written skills
•Integrity, openness, and honesty
•Flexibility and creativity
•Direct communication skills
•Ability to work on a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team

Specific requirements of the position
•Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish
•Detail oriented and organized
•Related experience helpful (i.e. background in development, grant writing, journalism, photography and/or marketing)
•Encourage and uphold a team atmosphere with fellow staff and staff at other sites
•Ability to work independently and meet multiple deadlines
•Minimum one year commitment
•Preferred that candidate be comfortable representing the organization and engaging visitors in discussions about future involvement and/or gifts

Functions:
•Research, interpret, and draft program and financial information needed for the development of grant proposals and reports.
•Research new grant opportunities and update list of foundations.
•Liaise with Guatemalan staff members from all sites to stay abreast of program developments and donation needs, potential newsletter and e-news stories and photo opportunities.
•Research and draft stories for newsletters, e-news, website, and other communication materials. Obtain photographs and create on-site displays and develop other materials as requested.
•Update Common Hope’s blog with short stories, anecdotes, and photos.
•Coordinate the translation into Spanish of newsletters, e-news, and website content.
•Maintain and update statistical database used to track advances in all program areas.
•Serve as vital communications ‘link’ between the in-country sites and Common Hope’s development associates in the U.S, ensuring they are aware of internal and external developments, as well as emerging internal needs and facilitating organization-wide development efforts.
•Work closely with the U.S. development team and Grants and Communications Coordinator to receive direction and requests, managing the workload to comply with established priorities.
•Be aware of the organizational strategic / development plan, priorities, themes and strategies and respond to communications needs in a thorough, proactive and timely manner.
•Respond to requests for items needed in U.S. to share “the color of Guatemala” with our supporters; arrange for the timely transfer of those items to the U.S.
•Liaise with area businesses (referred to as Community Partners) and work to increase interest among tourists in Common Hope’s work and tours through distribution of publications and tour postcards in these establishments. Seek opportunities to grow number of Community Partners and raise awareness of Common Hope’s work via local businesses, events and media.
•Assist in planning and support of donor cultivation and /or fundraising events.
•Provide support within Common Hope for in-kind donations from area businesses and supporters in Guatemala. Provide assistance with letters soliciting and acknowledging said in-kind donations.
•Develop and maintain a historic and current photo library to document Common Hope’s organizational history across all sites in Guatemala
•Distribute publication materials to site directors and maintain sufficient quantities of publications at both sites. Arrange for printing locally when necessary.
•Assist hospitality staff members with site tours and /or Vision Team visits during busy periods.
•Other responsibilities may be added according to the individual interests of the volunteer and needs of the organization.

*Training will be provided once the volunteer arrives in Guatemala
