Niños del Lago (Children of the Lake), Guatemala

Transforming the lives of at-risk Guatemalan children through mentoring, educational, and inspirational programs that build character, resilience and leadership -- one child at a time.

In a land of natural beauty and devastating poverty, Niños del Lago's mission is to make miracles happen for those with the least opportunities - but the greatest potential.

At Niños del Lago, more than 3,000 children, every year, will be mentored by senior university students in an annual educational and inspirational forest camping experience. These mentors will encourage the children to stay in school and believe in their own power and dreams as they journey toward a positive future.

Niños del Lago works to promote the values inherent in our programs: that each child will grow in self-awareness and confidence to become bright, capable, worthy individuals and future community leaders.

Ours six-acre natural forest site overlooking Lake Atitlan, nearby the village of San Andres Semetebaj, provides the children many opportunities to learn about their heritage and the importance of preserving nature.

Niños del Lago partners with over 35 child welfare organizations operating in western Guatemala to facilitate long-term transformation in the lives of the children. We have established a link between poor, at-risk children and privileged Guatemalan university students, who will work as Senior Camp Counselors and become strong role models for the children
