Description:

Safe Passage is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in Guatemala and the US working in Guatemala City to bring hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families living in extreme poverty around the City's garbage dump. Our program includes approximately 550 children, ranging in age from 1 to 21 years, coming from nearly 300 families in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Safe Passage enables the children enrolled in our program to attend Guatemalan public school by providing financial support to cover costs of enrollment, school supplies, and uniforms. Our Educational Reinforcement Center is where these school-age children come for a hot meal, homework help, medical care, sports and art programming, and a safe place to socialize. Additionally, our Early Education Program and Adult Literacy Program offer similar resources for the pre-school-aged children as well as mother and fathers living and working in the dump and surrounding neighborhoods. Our programs are designed so that each child and parent can gain the skills needed to obtain stable jobs, to be self-sufficient, and to lead their families out of poverty in a dignified and permanent way. We use the Planting Seeds methodology to promote creative problem solving and adhere to an Educational Philosophy that emphasizes love, respect, and honesty.

We host volunteers for many different countries for a minimum commitment of 5 weeks. It is free to volunteer with Safe Passage after paying the uniform and registration fees. Volunteers arrange their own food and lodging (lunch is served free at Safe Passage) and pay for the Safe Passage bus to and from the project. Most volunteers live in Antigua and take the Safe Passage bus directly to and from the project each day. To learn more please see our website www.safepassage.org
