One of the highlights of my (hey, Ginny Savage here) week is our Teacher’s English program. Launched in February, the program consists of weekly classes with the teachers in the Primaria Cooperativa.   We employ two strategies for attaining sustainable English programs in the two primary schools, but take different approaches to the nature of the instruction. In the Primaria Central, we provide English...

This past weekend we went to Semuc Champey on our last group retreat, and all I can say is wow. It took us nine months to finally make the eight hour trek, but it was more than worth it. We explored bat caves, dove into crystal blue waterfalls, tubed down a lazy river, cannon-balled into caves lit only by candlelight, enjoyed delicious food, and met some incredible travelers.Semuc Champey directly translates to "...

I was listening to a Freakonomics podcast yesterday about garbage. Stephen Dubner is on the phone with a study abroad student in Taiwan, poking fun at the fact that the "poor kid" has to listen for the trash truck to beep so that he can run outside with his refuse.  What a preposterous idea, right?  I'm sure you can sense my sarcasm, because for reasons then unknown I was offended by Mr. Dubner's...

The following is an excerpt from Kat Mueller and Hudson Baird's letter to the Vanderbilt Spring Break trip after they returned to the states.  To read more about their trip and see a video of the trashcans they installed, read their updates here.A-Team, As fun as the last three days have been, it was the first half of the trip that was the most meaningful for us, particularly getting to know you guys...

One of my favorite perks about being a Program Director is the retreats that MPI requires all PD’s to take each quarter, once every 3 months. Financed by the organization, these retreats not only allow PD’s to get to know another part of their host country, but they also provide a space away from work in which PD’s can further bond as a team and develop their group dynamic and vision. Last Monday, my coworkers and I...

Readers, we're thrilled with the chance to give an update from the Manna site in Ecuador this afternoon.  Our work is part of a larger vision to be leaders in creative solutions to development and mentors for college students that want to learn more about serving internationally.  Our other international sites are key in making that a reality.  Here's the update.   Hi! My name is Hannah...

One of our favorite weekend destinations is the infamous Iguana Perdida hostel, located in a small town called Santa Cruz on Lake Atitlan. Santa Cruz is a charming town with a welcoming atmosphere and a stunning view of the lake and bordering volcanoes. However, the town’s real tourist draw is the Iguana. Located right on the edge of the lake, the hostel is the...
