The Integrative Health Project was created by Dr. Joan Boccino in order to deliver treatment and training in Traditional Chinese Medicine to indigenous Maya.
Dr. Boccino is a professor at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in NYC and since 2011 she has invited her students and colleagues to participate in the outreach. The in country coordinator manages the clinics with NADA certified assistants.

The original idea was to provide health promotors with a livelihood but, in practice, Acupuncture is still a rarity and so the concentration now is to train more formal help such as employees of other NGOs until this mode of treatment is "mainstreamed."

With the exception of a few assistants who act as contractors on specific projects, IHP is all volunteer.
